When I began this series on skies, I stumbled upon a collection of phrases uttered by individuals experiencing hearing for the first time. One phrase, in particular, resonated deeply with me: 'I thought the clouds made a sound when they collided.' Since then, my perspective on the sky has been forever changed; I've been searching for its sound. This revelation intensified my perception of clouds, rendering them more vivid and dramatic, perhaps overly so, which concerns me. In this painting, I contemplated this notion—the sound of the sky. To me, a stormy sky is one that resonates, even if we cannot hear it. Amidst the tumultuous noise, seagulls soar, seemingly unperturbed, always safe.

Born in Chile (1980), Mara Santibáñez is a visual artist and academic with a distinguished career in both fields. Since 2018, she has focused on contemporary landscape painting, redefining the concept of landscape as a construct influenced by social, cultural, and political dimensions. Through her works, she delves into the intricate web of power relations inherent in these spaces Her paintings defy traditional notions of landscape, portraying scenes that are frequently perceived as soulless, dismembered, or overlooked. Through her artistic practice, she illuminates locations that have been devastated or rendered insignificant, transforming them into vibrant landscapes that enrich the local imaginary.
