ABOUT THE ARTWORK
A little artistic licence ... I know snowy owls are diurnal. I know they are rarely seen in environments that approach woodland, perhaps the odd bush, here and there, mainly open tundra, BUT I was interested in creating heightened drama through the contrast of the whiteness of the bird against the darkness of the background and to offset those amazing, penetrating eyes ... Forgiven? The snowy owl, also known as the white owl, polar owl or Arctic owl, is one of the largest species of owl. It is largely diurnal and is native to Arctic regions. They tend to enjoy wide-open areas, staying close to the ground and they breed in the treeless Arctic tundra. The snowy owl is a nomadic bird, rarely breeding at the same locations or with the same mates on an annual basis and often not breeding at all if prey is unavailable. Because its behaviour is unpredictable, its status in the wild is difficult to determine and it is classified as of 'Least Concern' by the IUCN. Nevertheless, recent data suggests the species is in considerable decline. While the causes are not well-understood, changes to its natural habitat due to global warming are probably significant.

Steve Nayar is a painter living and working in Totnes, Devon. He originally trained to be an art teacher at Nottingham, Trent University but after graduating forged an award-winning career in design and advertising. He always had a love of animals and became concerned about the growing loss of the planet’s biodiversity. So that, in recent years he has focused on realistic paintings of endangered species in oils, often head and shoulders, gazing out at the viewer, sometimes imploring, sometimes challenging. His paintings are in private collections in the UK and overseas. He donates a portion of the sale to various conservation organisations and he has been a finalist at the prestigious Wildlife Artist of the Year every year, for the past five years. For several years he has been invited to teach in Mauritius and in 2022, gave a presentation at the prestigious Caudan Art Centre, in the capital Port Louis about raising awareness of wildlife through art. Steve is chair of his local art collective, Totnes and Dartington Open Studios.
