ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Soaked in light was a resolution piece for me after a series of paintings based on a memory I have of a woman floating in a rubber ring in the carribean. I wanted to work on a larger scale to see how I could transform the image I had in my mind with loose brush strokes as well as incorporating abstract elements such as the dripping paint. For me this image was fascinating to paint, the fragility and the transparency of the rubber ring on the river was illuminated by light. It was also a very tranquil moment that stuck in my mind ever since. I have been inspired by works from Peter Doig, Michael Armitage and many artists I have discovered on the Saatchi platform.

Through the process of painting with oils on canvas, Jacob Lucas creates vibrant and otherworldly landscapes that appear both playful and expressive. By using collage, water colour and pencil as a starting point for his landscapes, surprising juxtapositions of plants, trees, animals and other structures are pieced together allowing Lucas to construct his own landscape experiences through the process of painting. Lucas also plays with ideas of seduction and paranoia within his landscapes. By using dreams and nostalgic memories, as well as inspiration taken from both traditional and contemporary landscape paintings, his paintings can appear artificial and alien in that features of the natural world are transformed and applied in strange and unfamiliar territories.
