This might be the third or fourth piece I created when I was beginning my experiments with using clothing as canvas in my paintings. Here, I wanted to see what a purely textural work would look like in this style. When I created the piece, the calf length gym socks were the norm. Now these socks are rather dated which makes them even more wonderful. Who knew back then that they would be so identifiable with the period? I mean, how much do you expect the style of gym socks to change? There is approximately a half a gallon of paint was used to bind the socks together on the plywood stretcher. The layering, the amount of paint and the thick plywood all together make this an extraordinarily heavy work for its size but also makes for rich texturing. This may end up being one of the most minimalistic works I will ever create, but who knows? I love to experiment and sometimes I will go back to re-explore an artistic direction. https://www.instagram.com/p/CQaB9NKBEtC/ The whole process from beginning to end of creating this convinced me that this method of painting would be an experiment that I could pursue for a while, that I would like to be associated with. I’m happy say that I have continuing this style, this experiment for almost 40 years now and plan to continue it for many years to come. As simple as this work is, it speaks to many of my friends. Does this speak to you as well?

Greg Hausler was born in New York but raised in Kansas where he graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. During his time at college, he developed his signature technique of using articles of clothing and other textiles instead of linen canvas for his mixed-media abstract paintings. His non-traditional use of painting media is influenced by Marcel Duchamp and street artists while his painting technique draws inspiration from Jackson Pollock and Claude Monet resulting in a style of work that is uniquely his own.
