I wanted to start a new series of oil paintings on a universal cosmic theme when I saw a Hubble space telescope photo of a solar flare emitting from a spot on the Sun's surface. And I thought, what if the spewing magma started to take on forms with symbolic significance... my theme had begun. In this first piece, the lady, naked and free, is leaping with the magma into space. One with the fire and the passion. Microcosm-macrocosm. Whenever we take a leap of faith, it's a kind of baptism of fire. Solar Flaire led me on to seek an even more universal theme called microcosm-macrocosm; statements about all of life. The very fabric of life. The elements I am playing with are atoms, eggs, seeds and spores. Seasons, cycles, orbits. Stars and galaxies. Micro life and macro life, all flowing together in the medium of space. To represent the human element in the drama, I chose the female, with her connection to the cycles, seeds and eggs. She, being the grower and birther of new life. Propagation and continuum. She dances through the cosmic story.

David Michael Halliwell is a fine artist from Victoria, BC, Canada with roots in London, UK. Dreamlike, surrealistic, romantic, nostalgic, strikingly powerful, highly imaginative and hauntingly real, David Halliwell's paintings are the result of diligent effort combined with superb draftsmanship and complete mastery of his medium. Halliwell paints as he lives, spontaneously and intensely. Cloistering himself from distracting influences, he works on a number of images simultaneously, returning to each canvas as a new thought emerges. The finished work may represent hundreds of hours of concentration, beginning as a sketch on paper and evolving surely through a process which includes detailed drawings on the canvas itself. His strict finishing quality masks the underlying transformation each painting has experienced leaving the viewer with an impression as fresh as the last brush stroke.
