ABOUT THE ARTWORK

An abstract expressionist oil painting in a style I call "evocative abstract", from the series "When the silence got louder". A sense of quiet, gentle clarity is built up through mark making and a finessed colour palette - in combination with oil sticks. There is a soft, transparent quality that is usually associated with aquarel. I use sand and impasto to give subtle plasticity and extra dimension to the work. I draw on themes such as silence and the “poetry of just being” (inspired by the likes of Pessoa and Pasternak) - ideas are made emotion, to be expressed by texture and rhythm. Purely abstract, the painting evokes feelings, memories and images - stimulating their recall to the conscious mind.

Dutch artist, I studied art in Belgium. Now living in the Netherlands again after working in the USA and Italy. I have exhibited extensively in these countries. My work has been bought by collectors throughout North America, Europe and Asia. It has been featured by the Jealous Curator and other art influencers - and inspired a good Instagram following. Until 6 years ago, my works were figurative explorations of human behaviour - reflecting our strengths and vulnerabilities as we go about our daily lives. Now my work is abstract expressionist - in particular, a style I call "evocative abstract". I draw on themes of silence and the "poetry of just being". I want my paintings to evoke feelings, memories and images - stimulating their recall to the conscious mind of the viewer.
