View In My Room
This painting was created during a time of inner and outer turmoil in my life. I locked myself in my room, blared music, and let myself paint it out. Working this way was cathartic and deeply therapeutic for me. I was able to physically see what I had been feeling inside myself. It was a surreal moment to see my thoughts and feelings look back at me. That is when I knew I needed to add eyes to this body of emotion. In addition to the expressive marks, there is a raw poem that I have left semi-visible. "Sometimes" is about feeling all of your feelings, embracing, and releasing them. Sometimes (Poem): I am angry. I am blue. I am upset. I am hurt. I am blue. Don't you see? Don't you care? NO. You fucking don't. Additional materials: oil pastel, glitter paint, fashion studs, and spray fixative.

I have a love for color, texture, and making "it" work. My art is a reflection of not only myself but the world around me. My art is a visual description of humankind. With each day, humans (we) are presented with new challenges and opportunities. Sometimes, we can't control our circumstances or what life throws at us. We take on more than we can chew. We mature and become polished versions of ourselves. We make new friends. We lose loved ones. We change. Milestones happen everyday. How those moments cause us to shift and grow are the layers that shape us into who we are. In my work, I apply that same mentality by merging various mediums together. Each artwork takes on a personality of 'their' own. Starting with similar materials, similar methods for making, they turn out different by happenstance. They always create their own story. My work is not only aesthetically pleasing but it provides exciting details for viewers to notice in each piece time and time again. ~ RTOWN Rachel Townsend, is a mixed media artist from Grapevine, Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth area). She has passionately been pursuing art for as long as she can remember. Her parents noticed a great level of detail in her work at the age of 3 when she drew her first portrait on a cardboard box. This led her to take countless art lessons throughout her childhood, educating her in various mediums, where she excelled in each one. In high school her definition of art was quickly broadened and she was encouraged to take stylistic liberties. She went on to perfect her style at the University of North Texas where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing and Painting in 2018. Immediately after graduating, she learned to navigate life as a new mother. In March of 2021, Rachel began marketing her work under the name: RTOWN. In January, Rachel began RTown Studio + Showroom. A flex space designed to build a community of professional artists to network, promote and market their work, create, and teach the next generation of artists. She not only creates and markets her own work there, but offers lessons and events to the community, as well as provides opportunities for emerging artists. RTown Studio + Showroom is currently located inside the Grapevine Foundry and Fine Arts Program.
