ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I aimed to reflect the multi-layered meaning and depth of 'sorting out' in this piece. Dominated by the color white, my painting represents purity and cleanliness. The black spots and figures scattered on it symbolize the 'unwanted' and the 'to be eliminated.' Within this minimalist color palette, there's a striking human figure in red. This red figure actually represents me as an individual who has completed the sorting process and possesses a unique identity. The fact that only one figure is red underlines how challenging and selective this process is, suggesting that not everyone will reach this stage. The black human figures are stencil-like, perhaps alluding to identities shaped by social pressure or commonly accepted rules and norms. The act of sorting out isn't just a physical process here; it's also a mental and emotional process I've experienced myself. My artwork offers viewers an idea of which paths to choose amid the complexity and uncertainties that life presents while also drawing attention to the challenges and intricacies of those choices. 'Sorting out,' in my opinion, is the product of internal auditing and self-assessment that every individual should occasionally undertake. Each detail in the piece serves as an aesthetic and emotional reflection of this challenging but inevitable process. 'Sorting out' serves as a tool to emphasize its importance, not just in physical realms like agriculture, industry, or data science, but also in individual and collective psychology.

Like Charlie Chaplin's 'Modern Times'... An unconditional workforce from the Industrial Revolution to the present. The disconnection between industry and people, the break between people and nature, and the destruction of both by industry. An unquestioned authority and lives revolving around like lab rats. In my works, isolated individuals and a vanishing world dominate. Unfortunately, the world I oppose in my works is also the world I exist in; it reflects my anxieties, my unhappiness, my loneliness and the emptiness I receive in return for unlimited effort. There is a resonance with Spinoza's concept of Conatus, with the discovery of isolated individuals, the disappearance of the world, and the emptiness of constant work. Just as Spinoza suggests that there is an inner existence and striving for well-being in all beings, the disconnection and dehumanization depicted in the work echoes the consequences of a world driven only by industrial forces. The struggle for existence at the individual and collective level is integrated in the web of social structures and power dynamics. My work highlights the need to reflect on the impact of this disconnection on the human psyche and to regain and nurture a fundamental drive for connection, well-being, and harmony with nature.
