“Spring in Carlingford Lough” was made in the context of an over 20 year process of studying and responding to paintings which started in 1991 with a study of the centre piece of Uccello’s Battle of San Romano. It is the fifth of a set of paintings of equal size, called “Pentaptych”. While the first such studies were made on roughly postcard size wooden blocks, later joined up to larger paintings, the panels of “Pentaptych” are of much larger dimension, permitting physical or gestural painting on a scale similar to the full human body. The full set includes: • Delacroix II (Study - 2012) • Rublev • Bernardo Bellotto • Carpaccio/Volpedo • Spring in Carlingford Lough “Spring in Carlingford Lough” is a landscape painting, though, rather than a stuy of or response to another painting. The painting is made with oil paint on paper pasted onto two segments of 18mm plywood. The lower edge of the top segment and the upper edge of the lower segment were first separately painted in Vermillion all around the plates, before being joined and subsequently painted on together in oil. The two segments were drilled through the front onto another plate at the back, with screws remaining visible. The overall painting was then varnished with yacht varnish. Wooden bars at the back lift the plate off the wall. It is not meant to be framed. Weight without packaging: 22.7 kg
