Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino’s St. Katherine of Alexandria is a painting by the Italian Renaissance artist. Here I have transcribed his work, a reinterpretation, through understanding visual research thereof, comprehending the history of the subject matter and why it was painted, when it was painted, and for whom was it painted. Transcribing a High Renaissance painters work such as Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino’s St. Katherine of Alexandria, gave much opportunity for exploration and expansion of ideas from the Past to the Present. Depicted in almost transclucent ink washes, the shapes suggest her ordeal in torture, condemmed to death on a spiked breaking wheel, which shattered at her touch, she was later beheaded. In martyrdom she has gained a halo of gold. In approaching the piece of work, I chose to work in the fluidity of ink, and thereafter it evolved with a life of it's own. "Fragment the past to reconstruct the future in the present." jsg This painting is inclusive of D-Rings and string, complete.
