Howard Brotman is a Philadelphia area painter known for his intuitive abstract works on paper and oil bar paintings on canvas. As a colorist and former graphic designer he is most influenced by Matisse, Gorky, Braque, Klee, Kandinsky and de Kooning. His line creates movement contrasted against the stillness of basic forms. Color plays a big part in his work as he creates depth, transparency and emotion into the work. From his imagination Howard Brotman applies marks with oil sticks reacting in a free-form improvisational way. His colorful palette is often tempered with patterns and a layering of various colors, reminiscent of early Abstract Expressionism.
