ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece is part of the 'Subject of Desire' collection looking at self-love and acceptance. It is a shift of focus from previous works, which were about voyeurism and sexuality. I started to look at self in the homoerotic, and the desire to be desired. I chose to work with oil paints because of the rich and vivid colour and depth captured. Also, I have recently been working on recycled wooden surfaces, because I enjoy the element of raw mediums. Artists I was inspired by and looked at regarding this piece are George Michael, Caravaggio, Jochen Klein and Bill Lynch.

I've always been deeply drawn to questions of personal identity, often drawing inspiration from my own experiences. My early work primarily focused on self-portraits, shaped by my journey through self-love, acceptance, and complex family relationships. Studying Meisner acting in New York allowed me to break through emotional walls formed during my upbringing, leading to a cathartic and transformative period where I felt I could truly flourish. During my foundation course, I continued to explore themes of self, experimenting with new techniques and approaches to deepen my work. I examined voyeurism and sexuality—interests that have intrigued me from a young age, but which I delved into more fully during this time. While at Goldsmiths, I began incorporating textiles and revisited performance art, delving deeper into themes of sexuality and the healing of past family traumas. My practice is constantly evolving, shaped by my life experiences and shifting aspirations.
