About The Artwork

I find and collect empty bird's nests as I recognize their fragility. As a woman and mother, the empty nest is a symbol of displacement. The nest signifies the need to seek shelter for reflection and awareness. In these moments of assessment I recognize the need to discard old stories that I tell myself about cause and effect of transgressions. This allows acceptance, transitions and growth; leaving the past behind for it is nothing more than lessons learned. The feathers are the symbols for me of light, growth, energy to discard the heaviness of old thoughts and emotions. The feathers signify the reminder to live in the present, for this is really all we have.

Dorothea Cheney is a contemporary realist painter currently living west of the Grand Tetons in Tetonia, Idaho. Her work is included in both private and corporate collections throughout the United States. Like a diary, my paintings are visual translations, re-creations of a moment of perception, an emotional encounter, a simple daily event that startled or awakened me into the "here and now". I am intrigued with the idea of the energy of emotions, both positive and negative, and what that energy might look like. As I would write in a diary, the emotions that inspire me are my own and I thrive on the process of discovery and understanding of my reactions to them. For me, painting allows this discovery.
