The first time I saw “A bigger Splash” was with an exercise at the university, in 2001. I was fascinated before that stain bursting into the blue. In 2018 I had the chance to contemplate it, in the flesh, at the Tate Britain in London. I spent a while staring at every single line and every single dot of the foam of that water splash. On the other hand, I am passionate about the work of María Svarbova. I love the symmetry, the stillness, the colours and how distopic her work is. With these two models, I painted these artworks, at the beginning, just for me. I wanted to fuse the Svarbova’s atmosphere and light with the strength of “A bigger Splash”. In the scene that I imagine, the girl of the photo has just dived into the pool, generating that splash of foam and little dots that I love so much. My job in this work revolves around that tacit presence that sharpens the feeling of solitude.

"I paint so as not to get depressed, I look for recreate the sensations I feel underwater, as a way to reconstruct that place, sometimes of security and serenity, and others of vulnerability and loneliness. I compose my images with few elements to provide visual rest: a few colours and one or two figures, which are often the same character and her reflection or alter ego. I use photography as a starting point, most of the time images that I take myself. Before painting I like to study the proportion of the figure, I draw a grid that helps me place it on the support exactly in the place I want and I draw it quite detailed. Then I paint with acrylic, due to its fast drying, the strokes do not lose spontaneity." Ana Patitú was born in 1982, in Argentina. She is currently living in Barcelona.
