As the body holds intuitive information in its movements, I like to work with my body in an experimental catharsis with movements that represent a mixture of body and mind recorded on the canvas. This painting is an abstract and intuitive glimpse into a well of dark subconscious in which some symbols arise. In many ways what we are told growing up is a lie, not to say that everyone we ever knew was a liar but there were some lies, hopefully few and far between. Still, the effect this has on ones ability to perceive can limit ones existence. For those of us who remember the past only fondly should try and see the other side of the coin. People have difficulty facing hard truths, and so they waste their lives potential on things that they shouldn’t be involved in. This is to say that it is not their path. Without accepting ourselves as we are we are in a place of constant overcompensation, simply adding to the existing imbalance. Through accepting those voices in us that cry out for attention we can inquire into our wholeness. We have to be honest with ourselves if we will ever stand a chance to truly know ourselves. More often than not this can entail a complete destruction of the ego identity, leaving a person confused and in dispair. This is what people through the ages have referred to as the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’. Here in this darkness, surrender happens and as all the distractions in ones life cease, one sees a glimpse through the veil and sees some kind of potential to work with the situation.

Matteo’s art revolves around identity, the integration and disintegration thereof. Given his international background, fragments of self are found in places separated by oceans of difference in cultural attitude and identity. His search for belonging is clearly apparent as well as his sense of being a constant nomad of the global cultural landscape. His work is an attempt to reconcile the fragments of his own identity inspired by cultural differences that have a history of rejecting one another. His work ranges from abstract to figurative to experimental to outright primal. He considers himself a ‘messy’ artist, existing in a multiplicity of artistic personas that channel his being through their rampant creations. “In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order” - Carl Jung
