ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Three fallen angels in an apocalypse'. This is loosely inspired by a passage from the book of Revelation from the Christian bible. Chapter 6 from the book of Revelation outlines various disasters that will take place on a scale never before seen in the history of the world. In my picture I have not attempted to portray all the events. I have simply imagined three angels representing war, death and famine falling to earth to begin their reign of destruction. The book of Revelation as a whole is extremely complex t and there is a wide scope of academic theological debate as to what these mysterious scriptures mean. As such prophetic and apocalyptic literature offers a great deal of flexibility for Christian artists to play around with the concepts, themes and ideas. Converting spiritual themes into visual pictures has always been difficult for artists. In my picture I have contrasted the tight drawing with the jarring, chaotic background space through which the figures are falling. The image is intentionally dissonant which is there to complement the dystopian, nightmare scene presented. Converting spiritual themes into visual pictures has always been difficult for artists throughout the history of western art. For a more complete discussion of the topic I am indebted to Dr Chloe Reddaway's lectures on Art and Religion. All materials used are of professional grade and the surface has been varnished with a satin finish. In cm's the picture is exactly 61x61cm. I intend for the picture to be hung on a wooden cradled panel which uses a wax finish which allows for a no glass framing. If you'd like me to do this for you, I can at cost price to me of the cradled panel. However this picture is ready to be framed under glass if you so wish. The pricing is worked out using a system recommended by Saatchi for artists to use and is available if you wish to see how it's worked out. Anthony Richard Martin 26/09/2024

"Anthony Martin’s art style is characterized by a deep sense of wonder and exploration of vast concepts such as time, space, and spirit. His works often reflect the intricate contours of natural objects, like a modest pebble, and are known for their painstaking attention to detail. This meticulous approach to repeated forms is a testament to his meditative process of artmaking, which serves as a personal exploration of his faith. His art is described as serious yet fresh, playful, and wonderfully unique, capturing both cosmic principles and the humble human experience." Ruth Smith, Gallery Curator and artist. UK Anthony Martin’s playful pen and ink pieces are the exploration of a personal language. They have an illustrative quality, considering issues and concepts which Anthony researches such as ancient history, scientific developments, and biblical texts. He will begin with the textual element, writing short summations of the research that will anchor the piece. The drawings begin in one corner, flowing outward as Anthony’s mind is encouraged to wonder. His ‘hybrids’ series contemplates scientific experimentation that stitches together human and animal cells. For Anthony, this research has a nefarious underbelly; combining human and animal characteristics to enhance certain abilities for military or technological uses. He questions the morality of playing God and the potential pitfalls. With his hybrids, he explores these questions and anxieties in a humorous manner. His morphing, psychedelic shapes and colours package these serious considerations in an enjoyable aesthetic manner. By Kate Reeve-Edwards, Art Writer UK
