ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is part of the series The Bench. Portraits on a bench...The Romans already had benches, made of stone or wood and until now. Always people who talk, who get angry, who wonder, who ask, who fall in love, who hate, who smile, who cry, who wait, who look, who just look, who... I don't know the length of the bench, at the moment people are sitting down. The order of the benches is random, you yourself can create your own bench in your park.... This series is made with gesso, oil and varnish on cardboard. The paintings in this series come framed with a black wooden frame. The dimensions with the frame are 24 x 33cm.

After studying at the University of Fine Arts in Barcelona, she started a long journey experimenting in decorative painting, preciosism and poster design resulting two decades later in paintings on black backgrounds with sober and disturbing figures. Lola Sandoval covers photographic archives of social groups she recomposes blurring all points of reference. The roles are inverted, the generations confuse, the goals are ignored and the memory value of the document disappears. From that emerge strange portraits or ambiguous group scenes, deprived from any space, time, cultural or sociological referent. The subjects then appear frozen and reduced to a setting consecrating by strangeness their peculiarity at the cost of their individuality.
