ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The color scheme inspired this work. The range of cool colors throughout the portrait in contrast with the small touches of directly opposing warm and cool in the features and on one side of the head defined the mood and feeling as intensely blue. I hope that the viewer feels or at least speculates what he/she thinks is happening with these extreme warm and cool contrasts embedded in a sea of coolness. I hope the viewer is compelled to view it due to its mystery. I chose acrylics because I knew I could achieve a range of cool colors to set up the mood while highlighting the intensity of the warm/cool contrast in the details. I also knew that the consistency of the paint would play a role in the rendering of the subject.

I am an artist steeped in the portrait. Vacillating between the study of music and art, I pursued music only to put off my study of art. I applied and was accepted to art school in Massachusetts, the first time with a scholarship, twice. I am interested in the face in a variety of media and when I haven't time, exercises in collage, which keep me sane and in the game. I am a university professor in music, but for twenty years was a high school teacher in NYC in music and visual art. A new preoccupation is my interest in spaces that have been inhabited. I like to add my own imaginative touches to such spaces to lull the impact of loss.
