About the Artist

Marcos Terol

Spain

Marcos Terol is a Spanish painter based in Málaga whose work is collected internationally. After studying Art in Madrid, he established his professional practice in 2012 and has since developed a distinctive visual language rooted in expressionism and figuration.

His artistic practice is articulated through an expressionist and figurative language that engages history, culture, and identity as fundamental conceptual forces. The incorporation of cultural, literary, and artistic references becomes a recurring strategy, activating dialogues across periods, geographies, and traditions.

Through the use of oil, collage, and occasionally pastel, Terol constructs surfaces in which layers, textures, and fragments coexist, expanding the pictorial field into a hybrid territory between the classical and the contemporary. Mixing historical references with popular culture through collage mirrors the tactics of Postmodernism, breaking down the barriers between "high" and "low" art.

Color assumes a structural role within the composition, deployed with a vitality that sustains works where expressive gesture, formal clarity, and deliberate visual energy converge. The "intense gestures" and "chromatic intensity" connect Terol to Neo-Expressionism (like the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat or Willem de Kooning), where emotional raw energy takes center stage.

The compositional framework reinforces the physical presence of the work, granting it an expansive and often monumental character.

Within this body of work, expressionism, figuration, popular culture, and historical references coexist in a dynamic visual language defined by chromatic intensity, material richness, and a coherent formal construction that underpins the identity of the oeuvre as a whole.
