ABOUT THE ARTWORK

‘The February’ shows a view at a modern building with fragments of garden in winter. The horizontal composition and blue colours create the calm, intimate atmosphere. Thanks to the contrasts between the parts of light and shadow, the paintig is intense and saturated with luminosity. Also creating this painting was a very intense process of searching of appropriate shades of blue - original, not banal, but mysterious and warm. The painting also has a inner contradiction and tension on the interpretive level, where the immaterial light becomes material, and the matter itself - non-material. Bushes in the foreground are painted in such a way that their shape loses its specificity, reality. It is impossible to define where the materiality of brunches ends and where the shadow begins. They remain a misshapen stain of black. In opposition to this, the light on the wall was painted very specifically with a clearly defined shape. What is immaterial and ephemeral - light - has been clearly defined - by shape and color. It is about the opposite of matter and shape, where immaterial light has clear contours, but material bushes become something non-material. It is about the contradiction and the non-obviousness. All my paintings are made in laborious and time-consuming technique of application semitransparent layers of oil paint. It is long process which takes usually over one year: each subsequent layer of paint is applied on the already dried layer. It is a very rarely used technique that requires patience and consistency, but thanks to this technique the painting has its unique depth and luminosity.

Agnieszka Wielewska is a painter, but also a set designer and illustrator from Poland. Awarded with many scholarships and prizes and her paintings are exhibited in Poland and abroad. What interest her the most is seeking light: both natural and artificial. Understood in an affirmative way, sanctifying the moment of everyday life. The light is close to poetry that abstract objects and space from their obviousness. Her art focus on tender look for reality. It is a positive narrative with intimate silence.
