The fisherman's wife looks back, away from her man. She is hungry, poor but hopeful. The sea is blue, inviting. Full of fish. His basket is empty, but today he'll go fishing. So this is a painting about hope, about a better future. And that is what you see in her eyes. Hope. Why did I paint this, I, a European, so far away from them? Actually, not so far. I've traveled the world for 20 years, gone to some 50 countries, visiting aid projects (for the United Nations where I worked), seeing the poor, going to places where no tourists go. I took pictures, sketches, and then back home, I would grab my brushes and paint. Paint following the tracks left by my memory. By the feelings of the place, of the people I saw, alas, so very briefly. So that they would last. In pictures. No longer fleeting shadows.
