About The Artwork

This work expresses a spiritual geography. It is inspired by the eruption of subterranean magma as a metaphor for the experience of an epiphany. The three symbols that revolve around the bursting volcano (or equally a cut tree) symbolize different ways that epiphanies manifests: through text, sounds and sight, and the manner of being. These are symbols for which meaning has agglomerated, and which the viewer can reinterpret. The work is made with an acrylic background that was done by watering down paint and allowing it to flow. I rotated the canvas adjusting with the shifting atmospheres until the right point was reached. The images are painted in India ink and the gold circles are applied brass leaf. I hope is that this piece inspires a reimagining and clarification of the geography of everyone's own epiphanies which we are all experience everyday.

Stephane Gaulin-Brown is an emerging architectural designer, thinker, and artist living in Montreal. In 2017, Stephane completed his M.Arch with architectural theorist and historian Alberto Perez-Gomez at McGill University. His research concerned the experience of lived place and a critique of the concept of space as a geometric void. These concerns occupy his creative practice. In his work he often uses techniques of surrealist automatic drawing, natural symbolism, and the logic of religious icons. He has given talks sharing his research at the Ontario College of Art and Design, the Universities Art Association of Canada, 8eleven gallery in Toronto, and the University of Montreal.
