About The Artwork
The empty streets of the normally vibrant city centre of The Hague during the 2021 lockdown invited wildlife into the city. While animals freely roam around in the space vacated by humans, mankind is in isolation. The painting captures the dramatic events of the 2021 worldwide pandemic. It is a picture of contrasts, perspective and depth. The exuberant design of the skyscrapers radiate that for mankind only the sky is the limit. The people hiding inside for an invisible enemy are vulnerable while the deer confidently reclaim their space. We are looking at a quiet evening scene while the world is in crisis. The picture invites the viewer to contemplate and dream away. As with the story, the oil painting is built up in several layers, providing a brilliant depth of colors while the use of complementary colors adds to the overall quality. The painting was created on canvas with the painting continued around the edges.
