ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This encaustic wax painting of an old fashioned "ice house" on a frozen lake was painted after listening to my mother-in-law tell stories of the old ice house when she was a child. The blocks of ice were carved from the lake in winter, and stored in the ice house with layers of sawdust. They kept for a quite a while into the summer months that way. This wax painting is an imagining of what the local pond looked like in winter when the now long ice house was still there. There are no photos, so I just painted a little log house as was described to me. This painting is unframed, but comes wired and ready to hang. The uneven wax edges are able to be seen, and are an interesting differences, showing the viewer that the painting is indeed made from wax. If you would like to frame the piece, I recommend a "floating frame" to show off the edges, while framing and protecting them. Encaustic Wax medium is an ancient and extremely archival medium consisting of beeswax, tree sap (resin), leaf wax (carnuba) and pigments. The medium is painted on with a brush, in layers, and then each layer is fused together with heat. Over the years and decades, the wax mixture hardens and clears, becoming more beautiful with age. Encaustic wax paintings are resistance to moisture, mold, mildew, and the bacteria that cause much fine art to yellow. My paintings all come with an artist bio, , a short history of encaustic wax, a care sheet, a polishing cloth, and hanging hardware.
