The Kite of Hope Print

During the first lockdown last year, NHS workers became a symbol of hope for the whole nation, working together as a force for good, trying to save people who fell ill from this cruel virus, COVID-19. The rainbow symbol was drawn in many different ways and forms, becoming a kind of people’s flag to accompany the standing ovations for health workers. My inspiration came out of these events, in which the public came to be united for once. From my easel, I wanted to create a dedication to NHS workers with this work of art that came from my heart. The painting includes three important symbols, two of which are in the form of people: the father, with his strong arms, symbolises the NHS workers supporting the promising young future to come, which is represented by the child. Above them, the kite represents the people’s banner in the form of the legendary phoenix bird, which stands for hope, renewal and transformation – just as the phoenix re-emerges from its own ashes, so can man from devastation and loss.
