ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A series of four painting compositions entitled The Ladder (I, II, III, IV) began production in early 2019 and was completed in late August 2019. It is a continuation of the cycle of twenty watercolor sheets entitled Jacob's Ladder. The four painterly compositions present a person's existential experience in dealing with the own infinite and the spiritual. The basic canvas format 70x50x5-8 cm was painted in oil in a way of laying different (transparent) layers of paint. In the last phase, each painting composition was upgraded with a three-dimensional metal accessory. Such a work of art can also be called the term used by Robert Rauschenberg "Combine painting". The image of the ladder is only stylistically present in the vertical and horizontal division of the format. The abstracted interpreted ladder motif on the canvas is then completed with a handmade miniature ladder that I made from a single piece of metal wire and then attached to the top edge of the painting. The artwork is signed on the front and also on the back of the painting.

Oto Rimele is a painter, visual artist and author of visual spatial settings. He expresses himself with pure form and colour. Currently, he is Full Professor for drawing and painting at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. In 2004 he received the Prešeren Fund Award, the highest recognition for achievements in the field of art in the Republic of Slovenia. As regards construction, his images are created is such a way as to enable radiation of colour light. The images are accurately placed into the space of the exposition area and achieve the creation of non-material colour communication: his images-objects enable the light of the space to pass into the light of the image, the silence and the inner sound of the image. Rimele strives to achieve such a state of the visual image that will establish, in the interaction with the spectator and the space, the state of wholeness: the artistic image is here in order for the spectator to be able to become aware of himself again and enter the dimension of his non-materiality. His work could be described as “sacral minimalism” and corresponds, as regards the content, to the European spiritual tradition and contemporary authors such as Anish Kapoor, James Turell, Bill Viola, Arvo Pärt. Additional information on the author and his work in English can be found at the website .
