About The Artwork

Inspired by the unveiling of the new emblem of the Indian state, based on the Ashoka pillars at Sarnath dating back to 3 BCE and excavated by German engineer and archaeologist in 1905, the new emblem features more menacing, angry lions bearing their teeth. Opinions about the attitude depicted by the lions vary, but they decidedly look more belligerent than their predecessors. The painting shows the emblem in the contrasting setting of the Dharavi locality of Bombay, considered the biggest slum in Asia. It interrogates the self-projection of the state as revealed by the new emblem by pairing it with the ground reality of how people live under its aegis.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours. Though watercolours are considered by some to be a poorer cousin of oil paint I believe this is an unfair and inaccurate view, encouraged on one hand by the demandingess and temperamental nature of the medium and on the other hand the enviable freshness and spontaneity it can bring to a composition in the hands of a master, In addition to my pursuit of visual art projects, I write nonfiction essays, and reviews for arts and culture website www.Middlebrowse.com
