"The Moment of Understanding" is inspired by that sudden realisation that something you have been trying to figure out has suddenly become quite clear. As a symbolist, I use the absorbing black as the place where one has come to , like a veil that hangs as a curtain, obscuring what lies ahead, as one tryes to figure out the answer to ones quest. On the lest hand side is an egg timer, in this physical dimension we are ruled by time, crossed with the scales of Justice. Doing the right thing in our allotted period of time. On the right hand side is the Heart for love and the apple for possibility. The bright colours pouring down from above represent the insiration and answers to the quest, The Ankh in the lower centre is the symbol for life and the Snake a traditional symbol for wisdom, particularly occult wisdom, which often comes at a cost. Through the information gained {the bright colours pouring from above} to the wisdom gained from your quest/journey 'the moment of understanding' is revealed. I use the revelation of the sea and sky as the journey ahead that becomes possible from this realisation. I have used the extraordinary 'blackest black' made by Stuart Semple at Cultral Hussle for the background of this painting, It actually absorbs light, Resulting in me having to use flourescents and very bright pigments to show up against it. The absinthe I felt was appropriate to add to some of the pigments as this has been part of my journey that has taken me so close to the void. There is also glass dust I added to the gold pigments to get extra light in to the Ankh.
