A poem written in charcoal in the shadow of the figure reads, "When the stars set on your legacy & the cities you lived in are caves full of bones will they ask Whose hands left these marks? What creature fears drove this primate to create? when the long day gives way & the blown sands cover your tracks will the etching and the stain offer any more meaning than ceremonies performed for the favors of dead gods?" Text from The Shaman (Dead Gods) This painting was conceived as a digital painting based on a cave drawing of a strange hybrid cryptid. I projected the image on a canvas hung on a wall, and directed someone who does not self-identify as an artist in the painting process. I went in afterward and adding some details to the shadows, and gesso to give it a source of light, then wrote the poem in the shadow. It's about languishing in obscurity and the creative drive humanity experiences. It is intended to be hung as a tapestry, without a frame or supports.
