ABOUT THE ARTWORK

acrylic colour on cold pressed, acid free paper 300gm, 19.5 x 28.5 in., 50 x 72 cm. I‘m always inspired by markets. So much body language and expression, so much movement. So I get the camera out and just shoot without looking, I click on the run. This is inspired from scenes I captured at local farmers market anywhere in Malaysia. In this case vendors selling durian fruit from the back of their lorry. Here I seek to capture a jovial social scene, and this phenomenon here over this unusual fruit. I use a more loose approach to applying the color, more abstract in order to capture movement and breathe life into these personages. The richness of the paint on this cold pressed, acid free paper initially absorbs the paint like a blotter. The next layer stands out brightly and adds to the depth for a loose and expressive result. Close up photos let you see details and brush stroke. Then there’s me with the painting for perpective, and the work in progress.

I'm Canadian born now residing in Malaysia. I've been working professionally as an artist since 1980 ish… time flies. I have exhibited my paintings in Vancouver and coastal B.C., Bangkok, Singapore & Malaysia, areas I’ve lived in over time. Now I do it all online. I’ve traveled extensively over the years and you’ll see that people, places and cultures are a recurring theme in my art. I attach importance to papers I use for my paintings. Some are done on acid free watercolour papers, from 180lb weight to 300lb. I also use handmade parchment type papers. These are thick yet pliable, strong, with deckled edge that add to the look of my paintings. I’m still a passionate guy. I’m passionate about life and people, passionate about art and painting. And I feel really at my best when I’m putting all these things down on paper. I only wish I had more time to delve into all these activities of mine. But I work with what I have. My health sucks so I’m slowing down. And there's more: book illustration, portrait, comic strip, caricature. I also work with camera and computer, to create the images brush strokes just can't deliver. So follow my brush work and hopefully you’ll find that special painting meant just for you.
