The non-manmade Image of the Savior The image of the Unmanifested Savior has this name because the very first image was made not by the masters of painting, but by the Savior Himself, as discussed in the holiday history below. Of course, all other images are only a list of that first image, or in general only its image. And all other images of the Savior are not "man-made", that is, made by the hands of men. But through such "copying" people were able to convey the history of appearance of the image up to this time. History of origin According to the story, Avgar V Uhama, king of the Odesa kingdom, became ill with leprosy. Due to unsuccessful attempts to heal among his doctors, he sent to Christ his archivist Hannah (Ananias) with a letter of invitation asking Christ to come to Edes and heal him. Hannan was an artist, and Avgar instructed him if the Savior could not come, write his image and bring it to him. Hannan found Christ surrounded by a large crowd; he stood on a stone from which he was more prominent and tried to portray the Savior. Seeing that Hannan wanted to write His portrait, Christ asked for water, washed, wiped His face with a handkerchief, and reflected His image. The Savior handed over this payment to Hannan, commanding him and his letter to his master. In this letter, Christ refused to go to Edes himself, saying that he should do what he was sent to do. But He promised to send one of His disciples to Avgar in due time. After receiving the portrait, Avgar healed from the disease.
