The poppies Print

This painting as a commission. The buyer requested a field of poppies, "something remembering Monet's paintings" she said. In place of the village of Vétheuil which was very often painted by the French Master, I chose a typical village from Brittany that I had sketched it many years ago. I wanted a backlit midground in oder to get the contrast in comparison to the field and the poppies in the sunlight, therefore I thought that this view from a Brittany village would be convenient for this subject. Regarding the field I wanted it to be slightly hollow and slanted toward the foreground. In order to make the work alive I added afew figures walking among the poppies. As a recall to Monet's paintings I put a figure, a lady, holding a sunshade.
