In my work, I delve into how the current political landscape in Sri Lanka impacts everyday lives. Using a mix of bold and muted tones, I visually convey the complexities of the socio-political scene. Faces in my work symbolize the struggles and resilience of ordinary people, reflecting the disparities and uncertainties under the current and past political parties. Through deliberate symbolism, I aim to highlight the gap between political promises and the real experiences of individuals. My recent series including close to a hundred paintings, showcases the Story behind the Lotus Bud, capturing disruptions caused by past policies and widespread political issues, including corruption, bribery, oppression, and a harsh mix of death and poverty illustrating societal transformations and fractures. Amidst today's Sri Lankan politics, lies a story of a corrupted father who is determined to propel his equally corrupted son to power. Surrounded by issues like corruption and shifting alliances, their morally questionable journey highlights the darker side of political ambition, showcasing the unsettling realities in this political landscape. My work goes beyond personal expression; it serves as a call to provoke thought and dialogue. Through exhibitions and community engagement, I aim to shine a light on the challenges faced by Sri Lankans. My paintings become a platform for collective reflection, urging viewers to critically engage with political narratives. Ultimately, my work is a call to action, inviting viewers to empathize with the stories within and foster an understanding of Sri Lanka's political complexities inspiring a path toward a more just and equitable future.

As a self-taught artist with over four decades of experience, I've navigated a dual career path in IT and the apparel industry, all while nurturing a profound passion for art. From my early days as President of the Art Society in college to my enduring involvement with the George Keyt Foundation, I've consistently enriched Sri Lanka's cultural landscape. My artistic journey has been shaped by participation in numerous group exhibitions and international artist camps, where I've continuously refined my expressive style. Despite the challenges posed by the recent global pandemic, I remained steadfast, using my art to reflect and critique the socio-economic and political realities of my homeland. Now fully dedicated to my art, I aspire to transcend the confines of the local art scene and connect with a global audience. Participating in residency programs like this provides not only an opportunity to further develop my craft but also a platform for meaningful exchange with artists from diverse backgrounds. It is my ambition to elevate Sri Lankan art onto the international stage, fostering cultural dialogue through visual storytelling. My recent series, "The Story Behind the Lotus Bud," delves into the profound impact of Sri Lanka's political landscape on everyday life. Through a blend of bold and subdued tones, I aim to visually capture the complexities of socio-political issues. Faces and figures in my paintings symbolize the resilience and struggles of ordinary Sri Lankans, offering a poignant commentary on topics like corruption, inequality, and societal transformation. Each artwork in this series serves as a narrative vessel, inviting viewers to contemplate and engage critically with the prevailing political narratives. By exhibiting extensively and engaging with communities, I aim to provoke thought and empathy, fostering a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka's diverse realities. Drawing inspiration from a variety of influences, including African wood carvings, European fauvism, and American expressionism, my paintings blend a sculptural quality with expressive forms. The use of symbolic elements and vibrant colors from everyday Sri Lankan environments adds layers of meaning to my work, reflecting a universal resonance with human experiences. Ultimately, my art is a testament to the power of visual storytelling in addressing complex societal issues.
