ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is part of a series of abstracts inspired by Beacon Hill in Leicestershire, UK. This is one of the highest points in the county and features outcrops of jagged volcanic rock. I have been visiting this place since I was a teenager. I used to go there to do photography and to play the guitar. Over the years it formed a mythical place in my mind and then I read that it had been an important place as part of a chain of beacons lit across central England for warnings or celebrations. The wind really does hit hard up there and it feels like the borderline between Leicestershire's gentle forested hills and the more spectacular peaks of Derbyshire. The painting contains many layers, sanded and scratched and worked into with palette knife to get the feel of the ancient rocks scarred by time. My main influences are Turner, Piper, Chu Teh Chun and Zao Wou Ki. I want the viewer to feel a sense of awe and peace... to simply drift across the surface and feel the movement of time on the ancient rocks. Framed with a simple but elegant white, open grain wooden, floating mount, frame with cord attached for easy hanging.

I was born in Kent, UK and have lived in London, Leicester and Auckland, New Zealand. I studied Graphic Design and worked as a designer for 25 years, juggling running a design practice with painting and exhibiting my art. Gradually the art has taken over from the design and I’ve been a full time artist since 2016.
