ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A surreal landscape is dominated by a large cheese-like rock structure with holes showcasing the phases of a total solar eclipse. The structure is in the shape of a memory based on the photograph in the center of the painting. A classical statue-like figure of me stands to the right, appearing to interact with a butterfly representing my deceased brother, while an umbrella rests at my feet. In the distance another memory can be seen with me as well as my deceased brother. Both memories represent different stages of life (childhood and adulthood) while the primary statue and the butterfly represent the present (end of the cycle for my brother + my grieving and moving on). Just like a total solar eclipse, a human life comes and goes in phases and is inevitable. **An important note about this painting- I used genuine Indian Yellow from a vintage tube of paint made by Winsor & Newton for the phases of the eclipse as well as for the butterfly. This is the same exact color used by Vincent Van Gogh for the moon and stars in his famous "Starry Night" painting.

'In my work I focus on themes of Science and Mythology. I use a blend of Surrealism and Cubism to achieve these themes. I am heavily interested in the history of pigments and manufacture my own oil paint, which I use to create my art. I am primarily focused on selling print reproductions of existing paintings and taking commissions. Please contact me if you would like to commission a painting from me. ' -Ryan Demaree
