ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The comedy and tragedy masks symbolize the theater and represent the traditional generic division between comedy and tragedy. They are symbols of the ancient Greek Muses, Thalia (the Muse of comedy) and Melpomene (the Muse of tragedy). These paintings have a three dimensional quality to them. I used a clay like resin to create some of the outline of the masks and cast small Fleur-de-lis where the diamonds cross. The background is foils

Geraldine Arata is a “city girl,” fourth generation San Franciscan whose passion is reflecting the human narrative and its myriad faces. Her colorful and expressive works have brought to life the sizzle of New Orleans, the nobility of Native Americans, classic figurative and whimsical sea creatures. Arata was influenced to take brush to canvas by her artist mother who sadly, passed away when Arata was only 11. Still, their connection as fellow artists has served as a continuing thread in Arata’s own artistic journey. Arata works primarily in oils but as an avid lifelong learner, she embraces other media and her recent works demonstrate her masterful use of color with new materials including resins and foils. Arata holds a bachelor’s degree in Art with an emphasis on drawing and painting in oils from San Francisco State University and a Master of Fine Art from the Academy of Art University in S.F. where she studied with world renowned artists William Maughan, Zhaoming Wu, Warren Chang, Tomutsu Takishima, Mark Tennant, and Dean Larson. She has also studied privately with Morgan Weistling and Pamala Hawkes . Arata is an award-winning artist whose work has been represented in galleries from coast to coast, in San Francisco, New Orleans, Key West, Truckee, Reno, Sausalito, and Benicia. Among her many collectors is executive chef Andrea Froncillo, owner of Bobo’s Steakhouse of San Francisco, where more than ten of Arata's colorful works can be enjoyed by patrons.
