ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Traveling to the place where sorrows are swallowed whole, you will encounter wild elliptical winds carrying particles of living dust, branching tunnels underneath upside-down volcanos, the seduction of impossible geometries, the promise of light at its very source, where cold and warmth reside within each other, inextricably linked. It may be a long journey, but you will know when you have reached safe haven.” Claire Delerue (2021) Ciprian-Florin Stancu has teamed up with musician Claire Delerue very often over the years, notably on artistic projects integrating music, texts and visuals. They co-founded the musical duo Flora|Miles in 2010. EN: I was taught painting, drawing and photography at a very young age, and I owe so much to my teachers, talented Romanian painters, sculptors, photographers whose creativity have left a powerful imprint on contemporary Romanian art. I recall Ilie Marineanu revealing to me the art of seeing: "When you draw an object, observe its proportions, but remember to also take in the space that surrounds it and the lines that highlight it. Follow that relationship and a whole different world will appear in front of you." I keep practicing that way of seeing in and outside the field of art. I strive to grasp the soul of things within the gaps and hollow spaces, everywhere absence shows itself and resonates. This paradoxical approach evolved into an intimate relationship with painting, with the physicality of painting, and eventually into a method I call "the im-mediate imaginary" - imaginary without intermediary. The objects, beings and places that inhabit my paintings take on a special kind of real-ness as they connect to a soon-to-be-manifested world, a world that does not seek confirmation from reality but simply appears and asserts itself within reality. My work is "im-mediate imaginary" art. While I reside within the confines of the real world, my paintings are openings into a different world, crossing over and flowing into the thin fabric delicately stretched onto the frame of reality.
