ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Google Earth, Amazon distribution centers, and augmented reality cast a romantic and even magical glow over historical mappings of Regionalism. Given what can feel like placeless-ness when a pair of toddler shoes magically appears on our Indiana doorstep a day after being ordered by a relative in Florida, what does it mean for an artist like Ernesto Pujol to call for a contemporary regionalism in American art? Animated by my daughter’s feet, those new shoes from who-knows-where explore the intricacies of the sidewalk that is falling to pieces on the edge of our yard. Right now, she has a better handle on the “here-ness” of those pebbles than the grown-ups in her life do, even though she can’t yet cause her own shoes to appear. This type of complexity helps me to visualize ways that articulations of space and place can multiply.

Henrik Soderstrom is an artist, designer, and idea enthusiast. Raised in Rochester NY by an exuberant Californian musician and a Swedish visionary, he grew up sanding beautiful historic floorboards and eating green peppers like apples from the vegetable garden. After absorbing inspiration and general excitement about life at the Rhode Island School of Design, he went on to design the set design for the Silk Road Ensemble's production of Leyli & Majnun, which opened in 2009 at the Lincoln Center in New York under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma. Henrik has enjoyed collaborating with the Society for Freshwater Science, the Music of Difference Project (whose album was nominated for a grammy in 2011), the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, and FuturPointe dance to produce shows and performances.
