About The Artwork

In a way, this image bridges the gap between my abstract work and my more realistic landscapes. I enjoy playing with space and creating meditative imagery, which I usually do with my abstract work. I brought that idea into a more traditional format by painting something real, pushing and pulling textures and values to make you feel a stronger sense of dimensionality. It is a cliff face but feels like the face of a forest. I enjoy images that look almost like patterns, which I think this achieves. I am always looking to economize my style to create the most evocative imagery with the simplest methods possible, and enjoy when an otherwise realistic object falls apart as you approach it. Take your time with this one, enjoy the small spaces. I like to take a benign space we take for granted and pull out something beautiful, refining the concept to something that feels luxurious. You'd never know this was really just a bit of urban cliff face, making room for traffic below. Well, I guess now you know.
