This piece of art combined my interests in history and decor. The Tudor Rose, also known as the Union Rose, represented the union between the Houses of York (white rose) and Lancaster (red rose), through the marriage of Henry VII to Elizabeth of York, after the 'War of the Roses', as they were later known. The Tudors decorated their ceilings and walls with the long-lasting and memorable rose design. I was considering how the Tudor Rose may have been painted on a ceiling, looking directly upwards. I created clearly defined areas of dark and light, with a limited red, white and grey palette, to provide an impression of raised plaster work, texture and relief.

I am Sian Pritchard, a predominantly self-taught artist, with experience of studying fine art at undergraduate level. My background is varied, having studied for a BSc degree in Biology and Geography, and recently an MSc in Computer Science. I have always enjoyed spending time developing my artistic skills alongside these subjects. I mostly work with paint, inks and digital media. My works concentrate on colour and tone, with each piece designed to produce a bold effect. I have worked with acrylics for a number of years. This became one of my favoured mediums, due its versatility. Experimenting with mixed media allows me to make further discoveries as I work. My designs are generally planned, rather than instant, but more ideas develop whilst I am working on a project. I gain inspiration from a variety of contemporary and traditional artists. I particularly like pop art, impressionist and art deco works, and am currently concentrating on combining these styles. I prefer to work in bright colours, and I consider this combination carefully in advance.
