About The Artwork

This powerful painting represents a rich piece of ancient Polynesian heritage. When I started this piece, I did not have a concrete plan in mind, but chose to use listen to my intuitional voice. My prerogative was to find a model with thick, full hair, with her hair representing energy/power/mana. I was fortunate to find Chailan Kanahele to model for me. When I asked her, what the most important thing to her was, her response was 'ohana/family', which is what the triangles on the bottom left corner of the painting represents. I chose to adorn Chailan's head with roses to symbolize her generous, big heart. The gold lines on the sides of the painting represents the star constellations that the ancient Polynesian sailors followed when making the long journey to the Hawaiian Islands. It was an honor to paint such a beautiful, soulful model!"
