Many years ago I sat alone on a beach in Tangalooma, surrounded by pelicans. A serene moment in time, shared with these amazing birds and the inspiration for this painting. Pelicans can eat almost 2kg of fish every day and they can store three times as much fish in their gular pouches as they can in their stomach. Pelicans are one of the world's largest birds and as such are a difficult prey for any potential predators, which means they are not hunted much. However, humans can pose a threat. Pelicans are hunted by humans both for food and for their feathers. The brown pelican is currently endangered. They depend on water for their habitat and food, so water pollution, chemical pollution and oil spills are a major threat. They are also at risk from bycatch and being caught in fishing nets when diving for fish.

Steve Nayar is a painter living and working in Totnes, Devon. He originally trained to be an art teacher at Nottingham, Trent University but after graduating forged an award-winning career in design and advertising. He always had a love of animals and became concerned about the growing loss of the planet’s biodiversity. So that, in recent years he has focused on realistic paintings of endangered species in oils, often head and shoulders, gazing out at the viewer, sometimes imploring, sometimes challenging. His paintings are in private collections in the UK and overseas. He donates a portion of the sale to various conservation organisations and he has been a finalist at the prestigious Wildlife Artist of the Year every year, for the past five years. For several years he has been invited to teach in Mauritius and in 2022, gave a presentation at the prestigious Caudan Art Centre, in the capital Port Louis about raising awareness of wildlife through art. Steve is chair of his local art collective, Totnes and Dartington Open Studios.
