About The Artwork

Working on the masterpiece "American Gothic," Grant Wood aimed to create a collective portrait of all Americans during the Great Depression, placing a significant emphasis on the tension in facial expressions. The central characters – a farmer and his daughter – embody determination and readiness to defend freedom and their way of life, even in the face of hard times. For me, the expressions on their faces perfectly reflect the current moral state of Ukrainians. Men emerge as heroes courageously defending the country from hostile forces, while women, though in sorrow, actively engage in the common cause on the path to victory. My rendition of "American Gothic" is infused with Ukrainian culture: the man wears the attire of a member of the Ukrainian People's Republic army, adorned with an embroidered shirt and papakha, holding a pitchfork as a symbol of strength and readiness to defend the land. The daughter is adorned with Ukrainian jewelry and holds a pitchfork with varenyk, symbolizing warmth and unity in our culture. Reflecting on a strong modern nation and its unique cultural heritage, it's crucial to consider how this uniqueness how it was preserved amidst significant trials. It grows from the strength and resilient efforts of a people who withstood aggression and preserved their distinct traditions. Presenting this heritage to the world is not just a recounting of history but a means of preserving it, especially after centuries of aggression aimed at its obliteration. By spreading Ukrainian culture, we stand as guardians of its history and uniqueness, safeguarding it from further losses.
