About The Artwork

This work is part of a small collections of paintings that are an experiment in materials. I wanted to see how watercolor would take to wood (prepared with gesso), and other materials such as enamel paints and collaged newsprint. The most challenging aspect of this series was the lengthy drying times for the watercolor which went on for many weeks before it was cured enough to add other layers.

As a youth, Corey was introduced to art making by his mother who provided him with pencil and paper to keep him busy; moments like these allowed him to explore a rich and flourishing imagination. Many of the things he found interesting during those early years were the natural world, human ingenuity, games and perusing a collection of Art publications his parents owned; especially biographies on Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, various Ukiyo-e artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai; all of whom had huge impact on how Corey would see and make art in the years to come. Corey utilizes traditional practices such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and graphic design. Current interests and passions he enjo include a love of modern graffiti and skateboarding cultures, manga and anime, computer and video games, the history of art, and consumerism in the age of social media. Today, Corey’s paintings include various traditional and nontraditional materials and resources in an expressive look into the human condition set within a larger Modernist/Postmodernist ethos, or more simply put...he likes to make stuff about stuff.
