ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Luciana Levinton proposes we have that experience and share her intimate ways of seeing, revisiting the ever surprising work of the great Lina Bo Bardi (Rome 1914 – San Pablo 1992). Situating one’s gaze on Bo Bardi has the attraction of re-discovering and focusing on a singular woman, invisibilized for many years, who has left a decisive mark on architecture and contemporary design. Lina was the Italian-Brazilian architecture who humanized rationalism, tying it to emotion. When she graduated in Architecture in Rome in 1939 she moved to Milan to work with Giò Ponti in his legendary magazine, Domus. In 1946 she and her husband, the art critic Pietro Maria Bardi, moved to Brazil where the Modern Movement led by Oscar Niemeyer was at its peak. Lina Bo Bardi worked in many creative expressions: architecture, museography, design, editing, theatre, cinema. At the end of the 60s she projected her debut, the MASP (Museum of Modern Art in San Pablo) which became an iconic masterpiece. Perhaps it is the building that best illustrates collective, social, political, moral, emotional, popular, regional, austere, free and urban architecture. Her later works confirm these values. The recycling of an old factory, CESC Pompéia, in San Pablo to be used for community, cultural and sports purposes is a master lesson of sensitivity and creativity, a clear example of how to manage more with less and how to achieve interaction between people, generating bonds and be the central figure of architecture. Viewed in perspective it seems not to be coincidental that its author was a woman….
