This small painting comes from a series titled 'Till the morning's paradigm'. The paintings within this series, when displayed as an installation, were intended to create something between a tableau and enigmatic environment, into which the viewer can enter. Here, this format of seriality, as opposed to simply a sequence of images, amplifies the relationships between works: echoes, reflections, and references between images accrete, both crafting and unsettling meaning. My practice has recently shifted from the single image (narrative scenes, portraits) and into painting series in which these ambiguous references to art history, cinema, and contemporary life are framed within painterly concerns. These formal questions are interlinked with explorations of how narrative can be translated across a series, through repetition of colour, mood or light, or a character. The figurative-abstract divide blurs in this serial format, the figure becoming a structural element in an ensemble cast, that can be reordered to create different narratives.
