Amy Wiebe Lau (Blackcherry Raven) is a Vancouver-based contemporary abstract expressionist artist whose profound journey in the art world began with an insatiable curiosity for the wonders of creation, working from her studio on the unceded and ancestral territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam and Kwikwetlem Nations. From an early age, Amy found solace and inspiration in the surreal world, marvelling at its ethereal beauty and intricate design of the abstract. This profound connection with abstraction and fractal imagery ignited a spark within her, compelling her to translate her awe and admiration onto canvas. Amy creates captivating and unique pieces that explore themes of nephomancy inspired by the divination of clouds, light, and chaos between space and beauty. Driven by an innate desire to express her vision and emotions, Amy felt an unyielding need to create something out of nothing, to breathe life into her thoughts and feelings. Art became her chosen medium of communication, a gateway through which she could share her unique perspective with the world. For Amy, creating art is a transformative process that allows her to transcend the limitations of words and delve into the depths of her imagination. As an artist, Amy believes in the power of art to ignite change, challenge societal norms, and evoke deep emotions. She holds strong values of authenticity, empathy, and inclusivity, using her art as a platform to shed light on social issues and promote justice. Inspired by various social movements, she actively seeks to create works that resonate with the struggles and aspirations of marginalized communities, giving voice to the voiceless through her creative expression. While Amy draws inspiration from many pop surrealist, low-brow artists, these individuals have indelibly impacted her artistic journey. These visionaries include Mark Ryden, Gary Baseman, Audrey Kawasaki, Todd Schorr, Tara McPherson, Camille Rose Garcia, Bansky, and Frida Kahlo. Their groundbreaking contributions to the art world have inspired her to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and embrace the limitless possibilities of artistic expression. Amy's chosen medium, a combination of resin and alcohol inks, was a deliberate choice driven by her desire to capture the vibrancy and fluidity of the cosmos. This unique combination allows her to bring her ethereal visions to life, creating paintings that exude a sense of wonder and fascination.
