This portrait is part of a series of veiled faces I painted in France in 2017. There was a debate in society around the veil in a context of fear and "terrorism". The veil has been used for centuries as a piece of clothing to protect one's face of the wind, dust and sand. In some cultures, it has also been worn for religious reasons. In war situations, fighters also sometimes use a veil to hide their face. Today it has become a very sensitive subject in modern western societies. It is surrounded with fear for those who see it as "other" or alien to the local culture. Often, for those who choose to wear it, it is a way of staying in touch with their native cultures and religious beliefs. I chose to paint veiled figures to highlight the complexity of a simple piece of clothing that has become such a sensitive subject.
