I went to Newport one sunny day in July 2019 with the sole purpose of taking photos of sailboats so I could paint them later. But when I got to Fort Adams, the entire harbor was empty! After several disappointed minutes of taking pictures of a sailboat-less ocean, I turned around and suddenly saw a lone, majestic, white sail by the Claiborne Pell bridge. Happy to have finally seen a sailboat, I immediately started taking a zillion of photos and decided I was going to make a painting of it. As it sailed closer, I thought the flag on the back looked kind of like the Norwegian flag, but was unsure. When the boat docked, I talked to the crew and found out that the boat was actually a historic 12-metre called Vema III and had come to Newport for an upcoming regatta. I was also shocked to find out that the boat came from Oslo, but I think the crew was even more shocked to meet some random American with a Red Sox hat who suddenly spoke to them in Norwegian.
