James Norbury’s paintings capture the beauty of the imperfect, decaying world around us. After studying fine art, James completed a degree in Zoological Science but soon returned to a life of writing and painting. He finds enormous pleasure in the colours and textures of a piece of the decaying world - rusting metal, peeling wooden doors and wet concrete. “I don't look to reproduce these images, rather I want to capture the essence of the thing, the play of colours and textures and that indescribable essence which age brings to a surface.” His work is heavily influenced by Zen and he works in a state of empty mind, letting the picture tell him where to go, rather than forcing a particular image onto the canvas. “Although much of my art career has been based around traditional fine art and realism I have come to realise that it's only when I let the work flow naturally from me, that I truly love the things which emerge.” James works in a range of techniques which allow himself, nature and entropy to collaborate on the painting - this is the most harmonious way to do justice to the subject matter, which is usually made by man and then eroded by the weather, pollution and time. James Norbury’s work can be found in private and corporate collections around the world, particularly in Europe, America and Japan.
